I was fortunate enough to attend the Sydney Festival Event, “Frida Khalo, Life of an Icon” and it was such a moving experience, I was inspired to write about it. I had a chance to learn more about her in detail, experience her creativity, as we moved from experience to experience, within the Event. Her artwork, fashion, life, the atmosphere of Mexico at that time, it was a sensory journey. Frida Khalo was driven by politics, love, passion and pain. My favourite experience was taking a VR journey at that event. It was unforgettable.

Frida Khalo was born in 1907 and died in 1954, yet her legacy is timeless. She is mostly known as a painter, inspired by nature, artifacts, as well as Mexico’s popular culture. She employed a folk art style to explore identity, class, race in Mexico, mixing surrealism with magical reality. Her work is full of vibrant colour and life.

Frida Khalo was disabled with Polio as a child. She was a bright student with aspirations of studying Medicine, until she was injured in a bus accident at the age of 18. This event changed her entire existence. When I learned of the details of the accident itself, I couldn’t believe she survived it. It was a miracle. It left her bedridden for months and it caused her unbearable pain for the entirety of her life. She continued to have operations that were so painful, meanwhile unable to bear children…
